It saves the activation to a file and allows you to restore it once you've done a clean install. ABR works with Vista SP1, and on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Vista. How to use it: 1. Download and unzip 2. Run "activation_backup.exe" 3. Save the backup files somewhere safe 4. Reinstall Vista 5. Restore activation by running "activation_restore.exe" ABR can only be used to install the same version of Vista you have the original OEM license for. For example, if your computer came pre-installed with Vista Home Premium, you can only reinstall with Home Premium. You can, however, switch between 32-bit and 64-bit. Because ABR is only meant to work with OEM versions of Vista, and there are currently no shipping OEM versions of Windows 7, it cannot be expected or even tested with Windows 7. mkCDrec is a linux based disaster recovery tool using CD, DVD, tape, NFS or network. After a disaster (disk crash or system intrusion) the system can be booted from the CD-ROM and one can restore the complete system as it was (at the time mkCDrec was run) with the command /etc/recovery/start-restore.sh Besides recovering the exact system to the same hardware (except for a new disk perhaps) there is the possibility to make a clone of just one disk. The command /etc/recovery/clone-dsk.sh allows one to restore a disk to another disk (the destination disk does not have to be of the same size as it calculates the partition layout itself). A thrid script, /etc/recovery/restore-fs.sh will restore only one filesystem to a partition of your choice, and the user can choose with which filesystem the partition has to be formatted. Linux 2.2.x, 2.4.x and 2.6.x kernels are supported, and if size of the kernel is not too big a boot floppy can be made, otherwise a 2.88 Mb boot floppy will be emulated on CD-ROM. MkCDrec supports ext2 , ext3, minix, xfs , jfs, reiserfs file systems, LVM and software RAID (multiple devices). Each file system is backed up as a compressed tar archive (including the tar log).
